I utilize sports massage, deep tissue, myofascial release and trigger point therapies to treat runners, cyclists, triathletes, dancers and other active individuals. As a part of a self-care regimen, massage allows us to enjoy our bodies’ potentials, aiding in recovery, treating overuse and injury, while helping regain and maintain postural alignments.
As tension is released in targeted muscles, others will be given more freedom to function properly, restoring ease and balance in the body. Skilled work, communication and client education combine for a great massage experience resulting in lasting changes. Whether maintaining overall health or peaking for an important event, my detailed, structural and goal-oriented style is particularly effective.
My style often feels different than a typical massage, invoking the question of what exactly I do. I most often explain that I work slowly and specifically, continually evaluating as I treat. The aim is not necessarily depth, but rather to target where it feels needed, easily received and accepted by the body.
Sports massage can be a great way to be sure your muscles are in their best condition. I generally use a combination of deep tissue and Swedish massage. The emphasis with sports massage is recovery and preparation for performance and less on making big structural changes which the body may need some time to adapt.
I view deep tissue massage mainly as a combination of myofascial release and trigger point therapy. Most frequently these are the two modalities I intuitively resort to in my sessions. To me, deep tissue means to work with intention, not necessarily deep but rather with great specificity and focused on specific goals.
Myofascial massage helps release adhesions in the body’s connective tissue that may have formed from injury, trauma or long term postural imbalances. The relief from this work can significantly help restore freedom of movement in the body.
Trigger points form in muscles and tendons due to repetitive stress, weakness, or postural imbalances. These knots or taut bands often radiate pain to other areas of the body. Releasing them is often greatly helpful in alleviating pain.
I love problems and specialize in treating injuries. While I use any modality listed above in treatment, I also take into consideration other areas that may be affecting or are being secondarily traumatized by the injured area. I have great success in treating even the most difficult of problems by questioning why an injury occurred in the first place, thinking creatively about the best possible treatment I can provide and recommending other treatment as seems appropriate, such as Pilates or physical therapy.
