My clients have continuously used their time on the table to pick my brain on all things related to running. For some, it’s been very strategic. For others, it’s simply a natural extension of the work we are doing together, since I obtain an incredible amount of information while massaging.
Runners are undoubtedly going to learn my thoughts on what may be contributing to imbalances or overuse, or at the very least hear me speculate about their running form, how much their body is being pushed, and how well it’s recovering. It’s always a great joy for me to share my observations. I am happy to offer time beyond the massage table!
My coaching is not only for those with specific racing goals from 5K to 50K and beyond. Most especially it’s for those wishing to incorporate healthy moving habits into their everyday life. Ultimately, coaching is advising and educating. This experience can be a rich, life changing process, giving you skills and knowledge about your body that you can carry deeply into your future. Regardless of your goals, you will see how taking good care of yourself allows you the freedom of movement and greater results in performance and beyond.
Receiving massage is great self-care, as the treatment benefits the body in so many ways. However, much useful information is obtained and can be shared to help inform you of how to take better care of yourself and extend the benefits of our work together. We can spend time setting up and making adjustments to a currently performed self-massage, stretching and strengthening routine.
One of the most important goals of movement is improving health. However, in our modern lives it is all too easy to obtain fitness while moving poorly and catering to inefficient and unnatural movement habits, or allowing old injuries to dominate, resulting in more pain and injury. Increasing awareness in your body and developing a strong sense of how you move in space helps you gain efficiency, resulting in less chance of injury caused by overuse or imbalance. It’s also fun and feels great to move well, leading to greater enjoyment!
I am very excited about the barefoot and minimalist footwear movement, having spent much of my lifetime considering how to most efficiently progress forwardly through space. We are beginning to understand that many of the commonplace movement strategies taught in popular methods come much more naturally and intuitively with less between you and the ground. An increased sense of connection with the surfaces you’re moving on can be very helpful to increasing awareness and ease in your body.
Even when these concepts are accepted and understood, the question still remains as how to best transition. For some it’s easy and intuitive. For others there is much more of a progression necessary to avoid injury from overuse as the body regains strength and balance, especially in the feet and lower legs, which have often become unusually weak from not being ideally accessed in our modern footwear. We can incorporate minimalist concepts into your routine, or make this transition a primary goal to focus.
Many people enjoy having structure when working toward a specific goal, someone to push and hold them accountable. Then there are the many who need someone to hold them back from doing too much, too soon. Part of the process of learning is often finding for oneself where these fine lines lie, the difference between doing too much vs. not fully experiencing your potential.
This balance point is incredibly different for each of us, therefore no two training progressions will look the same. I will not be giving you an exact recipe. Rather we will develop a flexible guideline based on many lifestyle factors, paying attention to how you feel, physically and mentally, determining when it’s appropriate to challenge the body greatly, and when it may be wise to hold back and allow for recovery.
The emphasis is on health and balance regardless of if a competitive event is on the horizon or not. It is of great importance to note that where many competitive athletes fail is in thinking they can push past their healthy limits, getting in the way of their own progress. Keeping health and balance in check allows for the best progression and performance, regardless of the goal!
I am direct and ask questions as I see potentially helpful for reflection, especially when I see someone willing to push themselves to the point of injury. There is much to learn about the body, believing in it’s ability to be well, move well, feel well, while learning to treat it well! There is also much to learn about why we chose the goals we do, how we feel about the process vs. the outcome, and how we view our bodies. Do you believe yours is as great as its potential?

Learn to better understand the relationships between muscle groups and how their balance is essential in running efficiency, speed and health. It’s all about strength in the core and pelvis, freeing the limbs to move powerfully and efficiently. Injuries and inefficiencies continuously point to missing pieces in these relationships. Each week we break down and simplify technique concepts and work on feeling these in our bodies. I continually focus on concepts related to minimalist and barefoot running, but any footwear is welcome and useful.
All levels! From what I see in my practice, running experience does not necessarily correlate to a more advanced technique level. We will work well as a mixed group, with many relearning misunderstood, misapplied or overly emphasized concepts, as we ALL make sure the most important concepts are ingrained. From there, everything else happens naturally.
Classes are ongoing, not following a particular succession. Come as you are with questions, concerns and injuries as they are all great tools for learning. Running well is EASY and simple! You already have all the tools you need!
